AFCON 2013: Ivory Coast qualify for Q-Finals, to face Nigeria Editor

Didier Drogba

Ivory Coast fought back to draw 2-2 with Algeria in Rustenburg to finish top of Group D to march-on in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals.

The result puts the title favourites on course for the finals but the Elephants must first negotiate Nigeria in Sunday’s big last eight derby in Rustenburg.

Ivory Coast finished on seven points, three ahead of Togo who finished second on goal difference after a 1-1 draw with third placed Tunisia in Nelspruit today.

The first half was a fairly contested affair and Ivory Coast were lucky to come away with a draw. Ismael Traoré pulled Hilel Soudani down on the edge of the box to see Algeria win a penalty.

Ryad Boudebouz stepped up to take the resultant penalty but drove his attempt straight into right upright with Daniel Yeboah diving the right way.

Fifteen minutes later, Salomon Kalou also came close with a shot but skied his effort.

The end-to-end action continued and two minutes later when a Soudani shot was parried by Yeboah.

Drogba too got in on the act in the 26th minute with a rocketing free kick that flew over the wall and wide to the right.

Dutch top scorer Wilfried Bony too tested Algerian goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi with a hard shot before the two sides went scoreless into the break.

Algeria returned from the break stronger as they pushed for their first goal and win of the competition in their formality match following their elimination.

Soudani came close with a 48th minute header but Yeboah saved it.

Then two minutes after the hour mark, ArthurBoka’s handball off a Sofiane Feghouli shot handed Algeria their second penalty of the day.

Feghouli stepped up to take the resultant penalty and made no mistake although Yeboah again was unfortunate not to get a hand to the ball.

Feghouli later turned provider for Soudani in the 70th minute who thumped in a header to make it 2-0.

However Algeria’s lead was short-live and just five minutes later, Drogba led the Ivoirians’ comeback with a header to make it 2-1.

Ten minutes from time Bony finally broke his Africa Cup duck with a thunderous shot from half way line midway inside Algeria’s area to make sure of the share of the points.

Bony was also fortunate to score after his shot took a bounce and deflected off Rafik Halliche into the back of the net.

AFCON 2013: Togo advance to quarterfinals for the first time ever! Editor

Serge Gapke

Togo have made history by reaching the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals for the first time ever, drawing 1-1 with Tunisia in a drama-filled encounter that saw Tunisia miss a penalty kick.

Togo will now face the impressive Burkina Faso in the next round.

Serge Gapke’s opening goal was cancelled out by a Khaled Mouelhi penalty. But Mouelhi went on to his the upright with another penalty in the second half.

The first real scoring chance of the match came in the seventh minute when Serge Gakpe attacked down the left flank and crossed from the byline for Floyd Ayite, but his effort went just wide.

With Togo looking the sharper of the two teams, Emmanuel Adebayor put a shot wide of goal a few minutes later. After good build up play down the right by, the ball found its way to Adebayor, but he could not place his attempt on target.

Then Togo did find the back of the net, although replays show that Serge Gakpe’s run was from a slightly offside position.

It was Adebayor’s through ball, in the 13th minute, that Gakpe ran onto, and swivelled brilliantly as he slid a left-footed shot across goal and into the corner.

Tunisia’s first chance came after 17 minutes when Yousseff Msakni made some space for himself, but was let down by his shot, which trickled harmlessly towards the goalkeeper.

Shortly afterwards Togo were at it again. A quick counter attacking move saw the ball zip down the right flank before a cross found Adebayor, but the ball took a wicked bounce before he could volley goalwards and his shot skewed wide.

Against the run of play Tunisia won a penalty when Dare Nibombe was adjudged to have pushed Walid Hichri over inside the box during a corner kick scramble, a decision that the Togolese were furious about.

Khaled Mouelhi stepped up and coolly slotted his spot kick to the right of the goalkeeper.

Early in the second half Tunisia had a penalty appeal turned down as Oussama Darragi felt he was fouled, but referee Daniel Bennett was having nothing of his rolling around on the floor.

In the 63rd minute, some great work by Adebayor down the right saw him beat two defenders, but his cross was aimless and Tunisia cleared the danger.

Seven minutes later Adebayor thundered a header onto crossbar after getting onto a right wing cross.

Then the drama unfolded with referee Bennett in the thick of the action. First Adebayor went down under a challenge from the Tunisian goalkeeper. No penalty said the referee, to the dismay of the Togolese.

Soon afterwards, Bennett awarded a penalty on the other side of the field and the Togo team erupted with anger, which saw three yellow cards flashed in a matter of seconds.

But Tunisia’s Khaled Mouelhi put his penalty attempt onto the post, after sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Togo keeper Kossi Agassa made two very good saves in optional time to deny Tunisia a winner and the goal that would have taken them into the knockout stage.

Tunisia (1) (Mouelhi 30’ pen)

Togo (1) (Gakpe 13’)

Tunisia: Cherifia; Hichri, Abdennour, Chammam, Kharzi (Dhaouadi 62’); Traoui (Ben Youssef 88’), Mouelhi, Hammami, Msakni; Darragi, Khlifa

Togo: Agassa; Akakpo, Nibombe, Bossou, Djene; Gaffar, Amewou, Romao, Gakpe (J Ayite 75’), F Ayite (Ouro-Akoriko 89’); Adebayor (Wome 90’)

Ex-BBA housemate wins election in Kenya Editor

By Victor Enengedi

Millicent Mugadi

Former Big Brother Amplified housemate, Millicent Mugadi has won a political primaries election to represent her party, The National Alliance (TNA), in the forthcoming Council elections in Kenya.

The slim and beautiful actress who was part of the sixth edition of the Big Brother reality show in 2011 had been causing a lot of stirs in the local political scene in Kenya since her participation in the show.

Local media in Kenya say she’s had her share of the entertainment industry and now feels she can be of greater help to her people politically.

Speaking shortly after her victory at the primaries, she said ‘I will be battling out with other political parties come March 4th this year. I could not believe that politics and movies are different ball games entirely’.

At various forums Milly, as she is fondly called, does not hesitate to say that she was inspired to delve into politics because of the suffering that she has seen among her people which has compelled her to struggle for change.

Mario Balotelli Signs With AC Milan Editor

By Victor Enengedi

Mario Balotelli

Mario Ballotelli has finally said good bye to Machester City in a €20m deal on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.

The former Manchester City player yesterday struck a deal with Italian Serie A side, AC Milan for a four and half year contract, ending a two and half year rollercoaster with the English champions.

The final part of the contract will be completed as soon as the 22-year old completes his medical on Wednesday at the Italian club.

Manchester City had signed the youngster for €24m in 2010 with the striker scoring 20 Premier League goals for the club.

Balotelli’s departure comes weeks after he was involved in a training ground altercation with Coach Roberto Mancini amongst other controversies, on and off pitch, which has earned him the reputation as the Premier League’s most notorious player.

Vogue Thailand debuts, gets male Editor-In-Chief Editor

Vogue Thailand

The Thailand edition of fashion publication Vogue has debuted this week, selling out within days.

Vogue Thailand is the 21st international edition of the glossy and the very first Vogue in Southeast Asia.

The first ever edition features a model wearing a ‘chada’, the traditional tall coronet.

In related news, the Thai edition hired Vogue’s first male editor-in-chief ever, Kullawit Laosuksri.

For the Thai edition, we also want to present Thai women’s cheerful attitude and lifestyle. For the first issue we wanted a chada, which is internationally recognised and has a sophisticated design. We searched the archives of the master of the craft, Chakrabhan Posayakrit, and then asked Phillip Treacy, a world-renowned maker of headdresses, to create a chada we could display on our cover’, Vogue says.

‘I guarantee that the second, third and fourth issues will be even better’, he added.

AFCON 2013: Champions Zambia crash out in group stage Editor

Zambia Team Picture ©Gavin Barker/BackpagePix

Burkina Faso struck a double blow at the African Cup of Nations on Tuesday by securing a surprise top place in Group C and eliminating holders Zambia from the competition after a goalless draw in Nelspruit.

A solid, defensive performance held at bay all that an increasingly desperate Zambia could throw at them and, combined with Nigeria’s win over Ethiopia in Rustenburg, means Zambia will play no further part in the tournament.

They are the first holders to be eliminated at the first stage since Algeria in 1992.

Burkina Faso, outsiders coming into the tournament, now play either Togo or Tunisia in the quarterfinals on Sunday, ensuring at least one outsider in next week’s semifinals.

“We believed we could go further in this. It’s a night of history for Burkina Faso,” said coach Paul Putt. It is the first time since 1998, and only the second time ever, that they have reached the last eight.

“We had double motivation being close to qualification and playing against the champions. I told the players this chance might never come again,” the Belgian-born coach added.

Zambia will rue missing their only real chance of the game in the 17th minute when Collins Mbesuma shot straight at the goalkeeper in a rare breach of the Burkinabe defence.

A cross from Chisamba Lungu set up Mbesuma right in front of goal but his shot went straight to Daouda Diakite.

They dominated most of the game and virtually camped in the Burkina Faso half in the second half, throwing their centre backs into centre forward positions for the final 10 minutes.

But the defence held firm and Burkina might have sneaked a goal in the last minute on the counter-attack when Jonathan Pitroipa just missed stretching home a cross from Charles Kabore

El-Rufai apologises for tweeting ‘Jesus Joke’ Editor

By Victor Enengedi

Nasir El-Rufai

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has apologised for the ‘Jesus Joke’ he shared on twitter.

A certain Ogunyemi Bukola, with the handle; @zebbook had tweeted: ‘If Jesus criticized Jonathan’s govt, Maku/Abati/Okupe will say he slept with Mary Magdalene’. After this, El-Rufai copied the tweet and added the letters ‘LWKMD’ which means ‘Laugh Wan Kill Me Die’.

The joke did not seem to go down well with some of his Christian followers who respectfully protested the joke calling it distasteful and obnoxious.

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had to go to his Facebook page to publish a full apology.

In the statement, El Rufai referred to the joke as an innocent attempt to show the godlessness of the Jonathan government to belittle anyone that dares to ask them to be accountable.

In the statement, he said, ‘To those who were genuinely offended by the retweet, I apologize. I did not mean to offend anyone, neither did the @zeebook I know and featured as one of the Young Voices in my Friday Column’. ‘Jesus or Isa Alaihis Salaam is a respected prophet of Islam.Every Muslim accepts this in addition to his miraculous virgin birth. It is therefore absurd for any Muslim believer to disrespect Jesus Christ’.

Tosyns Ten 10s: Lip syncing and other stories that caught my eye Editor

Tosyn’s Ten 10s

10. One Mic Naija

#OneMicNaija kicks off it’s 2013 tour with artistes like Seyi Shay, Ajebutter, Luni, and more at Browns’ Cafe Ikeja.

Even show co-host, Kel, is billed to perform!

9. Beckham Jnr

Genes. When they’re good, that’s total world domination time.

It’s too early to say for sure that David Beckham’s eldest son is really going to play football full time, but Brooklyn did reportedly try out for the Chelsea U-14 squad.

I’m happy he got the football genes. Wonder which one got the almost-music-but-definitely-fashion genes?

8. Speaking of kids and genes, Oh my goodness! Did you see the picture of Peter Okoye and Lola Omotayo’s son?

He should be a model already!

7. I don’t know what genes got him there, but congratulations to Ehizojia Okoeguale (may we just call him Ehiz?) who won the just concluded MTV VJ Search.

6. Largest jersey signing.

Guinness got the stadium alive from last week with the largest jersey in the world. All to celebrate Nations Cup and Nigeria’s presence there.

Speaking of which…

5. *sigh* Really Super Eagles?

First we give away a lead in the dying minute of a game. And then we squander a penalty and give away another lead.

Sure, the referee’s call for a penalty was beyond dodgy, but if we had scored ours, then… If… Dog..Rabbit

4. “If..Dog..Rabbit” by the way, is an expression most people don’t know the meaning of, the full phrase, nor where it orginated from. It’s also the other title of the movie ‘Final Score’, starring Mathew Modine.

There’s a movie to look forward to in cinemas soon, starring Jackie Appiah, Todd Bridges, Oge Okoye, Ernie Hudson, Patience Ozokwor and more. ‘Turning Point’.

3. Now I wish this was just fiction, but sadly no. People’s hearts are getting broken daily! It seemed my show on Friday was all about heartbreak.

Almost every call or text I received was from someone who just got broken up with. The funniest text was from this guy who was wishing his ex a happy birthday. He then requested “We are never ever getting back together” by Taylor Swift #NuffSaid #ShesBeenTold #ThatsAll

2. And while we’re on music…

I can’t ignore the Beyonce ‘did-she-or-didnt-she’ lip synch drama. First there was the inauguration.

Then there was the praise. Then there was the morning after.

It was alleged that Beyonce’s rendition of the National Anthem had been recorded; more “Ah say can you sync’ than ‘Oh say can you see.”

I don’t think people are as mad about the lip syncing as they are about the deception. I mean, Mrs Z even took out her ear-piece dramatically and all.

Ah well…

1. If Pop is less your thing and Hip-Hop is more up your alley, then what do you think about T.I’s 75 million dollar record deal demand?

He’s now a free agent since his 10 year contract with Atlantic expired a month ago. Now he says for 75 million dollars, the lucky record label gets

- 3 albums

- 10 to 20% of publishing and some other rights

- Exclusive signing of Grand Hustle artists

And so on.

So, anyone taking him up on that offer? (If I could, I would)

71-year-old woman arrested for prostitution Editor

By Osagie Alonge

Sygun Liebhart

A 71-year-old woman Sygun Liebhart has been arrested on prostitution charges following a raid at a Glastonbury hotel in Connecticut, US.

According to agent James Kennedy of the Glastonbury Police Department, authorities were tipped off to Liebhart’s alleged ‘prostitution activities’ by an advertisement in the classified section of Backpage.com, the Huffingtonpost reports.

Liebhart, according to police, promoted herself in the escort section of the website under the name ‘Lola.’ Although the ad is now offline, a cached version of the ad for ‘Lola’ reads:

Older is Better … A well preserved beauty. All natural and busty 38DD. Sexy, fit, warm and friendly.

‘Lola’ charges up to $150 for a ‘nice time’. Other younger women charge about double that amount.

Surveillance units were dispatched to the hotel and took Liebhart into custody.

Liebhart, who is a resident of nearby Westport, has been charged with a single count of prostitution and bond was set at $500.00 non-surety.

AFCON 2013: Adebayor’s Togo win first game, send Algeria packing! Editor

Emmanuel Adebayor

Algeria confirmed their early exit from the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations when they went down 2-0 against Togo at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday night.

A first half goal from Emmanuel Adebayor and a late second half strike from substitute Dove Wome was enough to secure maximum points for the Sparrow Hawks in a match where they had to absorb a lot of pressure.

The Fennec foxes took the initiative in the early stages of the match and should have taken the lead in the 14th minute when Sofiane Feghouli released Islam Slimani on the right side of the box, but he flashed his shot wide.

Two minutes later Moustapha Salifou picked out Adebayor at the far post and the lanky striker was able to outjump Essaid Belkalem, only to send his header wide of the post.

Then in the 22nd minute Tunisia had their first effort on target as Adlene Guedioura connected with a corner from Feghouli, but his header was plucked out of the air by Kossi Agassa.

The Togolese goalkeeper was called into action just a minute later, this time diving to his left to stop a deflected strike from Algeria captain Medhi Lacen.

However, it was the Sparrow Hawks who took the lead somewhat against the run of play in the 31st minute when header from Moustapha Salifou put Adebayor through on goal to slide the ball past Rais M’Bolhi.

Vahid Halilhodzic’s side came close to leveling matters five minutes later when Slimani collected a long pass on the right before firing towards goal, but Agassa came out of his line to block his shot.

Algeria continued to throw everything at Tunisia in the second half and in the 52nd minute Hilel Soudani headed wide at the near post after meeting a cross from Foued Kadir.

Then in the 70th minute Slimani had another chance to find the back of the net as he ran ahead of his marker to connect with a cross from Djamel Mesbah, but he failed to keep his header down.

Algeria came close to finding the equaliser again in the 84th minute but Hilel Soudani saw his shot blocked by his own teammate Rafik Halliche before Yassine Bezzaz fired over the crossbar from the rebound.

The match was interrupted when one of the goalposts had to be replaced, but it was Togo who looked sharp when play resumed as Wome ran onto a through-pass before placing his low shot past the goalkeeper.

Algeria 0

Togo (1) 2 (Adebayor 31’, Wome 90 + 1’)

Algeria: M’Bolhi; Mesbah, Belkalem, Halliche, Mostefa; Lacen (Bouazza 83’), Guedioura; Soudani, Kadir (Bezzaz 66’), Feghouli; Slimani (Aoudia 75’)

Togo: Agassa; Djene, Nibombe, Akakpo, Mamah Abdoul-Gafar; Amewou, Romao; Gakpe (Mani 74’), Salifou (Wome 57’), J. Ayite (Bossou 90+1’); Adebayor

AFCON 2013: Ivory Coast trash Tunisia 3-0 as Didier Drogba gets benched Editor

Gervinho

Ivory Coast scored two late goals to wrap up a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Tunisia in their Group D Africa Cup of Nations clash in Rustenburg on Saturday.

Gervinho had put the Elephants 1-0 up in the first half and it seemed as if they would have a tense period at the end of the game to see off the North Africans, but Yaya Toure and Didier Ya Konan scored in the dying minutes to ease their nerves.

The Elephants surprisingly left the talismanic Didier Drogba on the bench for the start of the game, but his absence didn’t stop them from looking lively and energetic in attack, particularly in the first half.

Ivory Coast took charge of the game from the early minutes and proceeded to create several half chances. Their first clear opportunities arrived in the 19th and 20th minutes, but Salomon Kalou and Lacina Traore missed out.

However, just a minute later, Gervinho put the team in orange ahead, exchanging passes with Traore before sending a curling shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Moez Ben Cherifia and into the back of the net.

The West Africans should also have been awarded a penalty toward the end of the first half when Tunisia captain Khalil Chammam handled the ball in the 18-yard area, but referee Rajindraparsad Seechurn of Mauritius waved away their appeals.

Ivory Coast thought they had doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half when Kalou fired home from Gervinho’s pull-back from the by-line, but the Arsenal attacker had been flagged offside.

Tunisia brought on both Oussama Darragi and Hamdi Harbaoui within 12 minutes of the restart, but it was the Elephants who remained the predominant attacking force in the match.

The arrival of Didier Drogba in the 68th minute added an extra impetus to the West Africans’ attack but they still had to wait until the 87th minute to kill off the game as a contest as Yaya Toure fired home a long range screamer to double their advantage.

In the 90th minute substitute Didier Ya Konan steered home a low shot to make it 3-0 after an assist by the excellent Gervinho.
