Iconic Paralympian Oscar Pistorius was arrested early this morning (Thursday, February 14, 2013) on suspicion of murder after the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

According to Reuters, Pistorius has been taken in for questioning by police in Pretoria about the incident. He is expected to be charged with murder when he appears in court this afternoon.

Lt. Col. Katlego Mogale told The Associated Press that officers found a 9-mm pistol at the scene.

A Police spokesperson Captain Sarah Mcirca has also confirmed that the victim was shot in the arm and the head, USA Today reported.

We can’t comment on [Pistorius'] emotional well-being, but he is traumatized after losing someone close to him’, police said.

Steenkamp, a model and 30-year-old law school graduate, had been dating Pistorius for several months, NBC News reported. Many are speculating the fatal shooting may have been the result of a Valentine’s day surprise gone wrong. The are unconfirmed reports Pistorius pulled the trigger thinking it was a robber.

Although SA Police authorities have not officially released the victim’s identity, Steenkamp’s publicist Sarit Tomlinson described the incident as a “huge loss for everyone and too shocking for words.”

‘She was a rising star … a very bright young girl,’ Tomlinson said.

Pistorius, 26, who was born without a fibula in both legs, was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics.
